How do I clean the stoma and surrounding skin?

The most important thing is to only use water, not cleansers or soaps. You should also avoid baby wipes or similar as these can cause skin reactions or prevent the baseplate from sticking properly. All you need to use is a moistened cloth or a soft paper towel. Once cleaned allow it to dry naturally before affixing the new pouching system. When changing the pouching system it’s not abnormal for there to be a small amount of bleeding that should naturally cease after a short time.

Check both the surrounding skin and the stoma for any signs of irritation. The colour of the stoma is rather like that of the inside of your mouth – a red colour. However, should the stoma appear black or very dark purple you should contact either your stomal therapy nurse or doctor.
